Video games have been around for decades, with the original concept of gaming developed in the 1950s and 1960s. These games started as simple games and simulations on minicomputers and mainframes. At the time, many experts believed video gaming to be a passing trend that would die down eventually. Yet the opposite has happened.

Since then, the gaming industry has developed in leaps and bounds. The advances in technology, changes in demographics, and increases in the popularity of gaming merchandise have led to extreme growth within the video game industry. As the popularity of gaming skyrockets, tech companies are becoming more involved, and the processes are becoming more complex.

Creating a new state-of-the-art game can take decades of development and cost millions of dollars. Despite this, the gaming industry is thriving and continually growing and improving. Why is this? How can pixels on a screen become such a prosperous industry? Here’s why the video game industry is growing at its highest pace ever.

The History of the Video Game Industry

While the concept of gaming arose between 1948 and 1970, these were mostly experiments by computer scientists at the time. These were very simple simulations and included games like Nimrod (1951), Strachey’s Draughts Program (1951), Tic-Tac-Toe (1951), and Tennis for Two (1958).

Once higher-performing computers were released, specifically, the IBM 1560 games with video graphics started to be developed. With this, we saw the release of Spacewar!, Moon Landing, and 3D Tic-Tac-Toe. While these games were much more popular than their original counterparts, they didn’t gain much mainstream popularity.

The birth of the video gaming industry truly occurred between 1971 and 1978. This is when Ralph Baer came up with the idea for a device that connects to your television. This was the concept for the first-ever gaming console. Baer took this idea and developed the ‘Brown Box,’ which was a console to play a table tennis video game.

Baer took this idea further and developed Magnavox Odyssey, the first-ever commercial home video game console. This occurred in 1972, and in the same year, Atari released Pong. Pong is still considered one of the first arcade video games. Pong spawned the origin of other popular arcade games like Gran Trak 10 (1974), Tank (1974), Wheels (1975), Gun Fight (1975), and Sea Wolf (1976).

After this, there was an explosion of coin-operated arcade games, ushering in the golden age of gaming (1978-1982). Most households couldn’t afford gaming consoles, so kids flocked to arcades where they could enjoy arcade-style video games. During this period is when the value of the gaming industry first became apparent. The gaming industry jumped from $308MM in 1978 to $968MM in 1879 and then to $2.8B in 1980.

During this period, games started focusing on incorporating unique characters, giving birth to favorites like Pac-Man, Qubert, and Donkey Kong. This also sparked the development of second-generation home consoles that enabled game-based storage. Computer games were also being developed, which gave way to a period of rapid evolution for computer gaming.

With the personal computer gaining popularity in the late 70s, we soon saw an increase in the popularity of computer games. The first batch of games for these new generation PCs includes text-based games and even gambling games like Blackjack. This period also made way for the first range of handheld systems, giving rise to the first Nintendo.

This led to the birth of third-generation gaming consoles. During this period, Nintendo and Sega took charge by developing and releasing new consoles that included a gamepad (or joypad) instead of joysticks and paddles. Systems like Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Seag’s SG-100 were released. Along with these new consoles, we also saw the birth of new games, some of which, like The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy, remain popular to this day.

Between 1987 and 2004, the improvement in graphics meant another new generation of gaming consoles was released to support 16-bit displays. Video Game consoles were also transitioning from cartridges to CD-based games. Nintendo still ruled the roost during this period, and we saw the release of the Nintendo Game Boy. We also saw the releases of Atari Lynx, Sega Game Gear, and NEC Turbo Express. Popular games during this generation were Tetris, Pokemon Red and Blue, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Super Mario Land.

In the 1990s, innovations meant that graphics could transition from raster to 3D. This change saw the birth of new genres within the gaming industry. First-person shooters, real-time strategy, and massively multiplayer online games started taking center stage. This led to the release of games like Quake, Resident Evil, SimCity, and others.

The fifth generation of video game consoles occurred between 1993 and 2006. During this generation, there wasn’t a vast improvement in innovation and technology, yet we still saw the release of the Sega Saturn, the Sony PlayStation, and the Nintendo 64. Popular games during this period included Dance Dance Revolution, The Legends of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, and others.

At this time in gaming, cell phones were also becoming accessible. Devices such as the iconic Nokia 6110 provided time-killer and arcade-style games as an option. Who remembers Snake? This was the first introduction to the mobile video gaming industry.

After this, the gaming industry continued to grow and develop, releasing increasingly complex games and consoles. Throughout the years, we’ve seen vast improvements, not only in the quality of games but also in the consoles themselves and even in the storytelling. Consoles have become more advanced, able to play even the highest resolution games with near-realistic graphics easily.

Mobile gaming has become a thriving video game industry with a vast consumer base. Online gaming has become immensely popular, and multiplayer games are being released more frequently. New consoles are starting to explore how people enjoy games, leading to the development of augmented reality and virtual reality games.

Current Gaming Industry Overview

While it can be easy to say that the gaming industry is booming, what does that mean? The truth is, it all comes down to revenue growth and market share. Few industries have experienced the rapid and continued growth of the video game industry.

It’s important to note that the gaming industry isn’t only composed of video games but also considers the revenue generated from the sales of game consoles and other game-related merchandise. With a constantly evolving video game industry that benefits from technological advancements and innovation, gaming is currently one of the most popular entertainment industries. In 2021, we saw video gaming surpass the film, television, and music industry in global revenue.

The estimated value of the global video game industry in 2022 was valued at almost $347 billion. The mobile gaming market was estimated to contribute $248 billion of the total global revenue. The gaming industry revenue is also expected to reach $385 billion in 2023, with a projected year-on-year growth of 7.9% until 2027.

What Is the Fastest Growing Section of the Video Game Industry?

The mobile gaming sector is currently the fastest-growing segment. Mobile games beat out other sectors in the number of players and revenue. In 2021, 2.8 billion mobile gamers contributed 50% of the global revenue. PC gaming only had 1.4 billion players, and console games contributed only 871 million players in 2021.

These stats are expected to remain consistent until 2024, when it’s projected that gamers on mobile phones will increase to 3.1 billion players. Alternatively, the number of PC gamers is expected to reach 1.5 billion, and console gamers 943 million.

The popularity of mobile games is expected to continue as mobile devices become more advanced. Playing video games on your mobile isn’t just convenient, but it’s also become a cutting-edge platform that includes high-quality games. Video game developers aren’t solely focused on PC and gaming anymore, and the mobile gaming industry’s growth reflects that.

How Are Tech Companies Becoming Involved in the Video Game Sector?

With the growth of the video game industry, tech companies are looking for ways to get involved and get a slice of the action. As such, we’ve seen tech giants like Google, Apple, and Meta dipping their toes into the video game industry. These non-traditional gaming companies are looking at ways to make streaming video games as easy as listening to a song on Spotify or watching a show on Netflix.

Microsoft has already had some success in game streaming. They’ve been involved in the global gaming industry for a while and have released consoles (i.e., the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox series S/X), computer games, and console games alike.

In 2020, Microsoft introduced Project xCloud, a video game streaming service enabling users to stream Xbox games to PC and other devices. To access the services, gamers need to be subscribers of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Similarly, Google released Stadia as a cloud gaming platform. Stadia was supposed to enable gamers to stream video games in high quality. This service is available through Google browsers, phones, tablets, and desktops. Despite the tech giants backing, Google Stadia didn’t fare very well and was shut down in January this year.

Meta is also trying to break into the gaming industry with the development of a gaming platform in partnership with Unity Technology. The goal of this partnership is to improve XR Education. With the expanding market for extended reality (XR), this partnership hopes to make access to augmented, virtual, and mixed-reality wearables easier.

Battle of the Gaming Platforms

Since the development of the very first gaming devices, there has always been controversy surrounding which one is the best. Healthy competition is always good for a growing industry. With so many platforms to choose from, loyal communities have developed, resulting in various console wars where one platform hopes to outperform the other. This drives the gaming industry to continue growing and improving.

In the past, it took about five years before we saw major changes in console and PC gaming. However, the pace has increased significantly in the last few years. As new technology develops and games become even better, the platforms we use to enjoy playing games also need to improve. As such, we see releases of new consoles and gaming computers more frequently.

Gaming Consoles

When it comes to console gaming, these communities are very vocal in their preferences for one over the other. Many believe that console tribalism is a form of sunk cost fallacy. The idea is that a new-gen gaming console is expensive. As such, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll buy two different ones. Since you’re investing so much money in your chosen console, you’re going to convince yourself that it’s the best in order to justify the expense.

Something else that plays a role in the console war is the cultural associations with the different consoles. In the past, PlayStation was associated as an extension of club culture. It was something to play with friends, especially before or after a night out. Alternatively, Xbox had a reputation as the ‘jock’s console.’ It was considered the best console if you enjoyed shooting or racing games. On the other side of the spectrum, you’d get a Sega Dreamcast if you enjoyed Japanese culture. Nintendo consoles were best if you enjoyed colorful and approachable games. While these cultures no longer play a significant role, the audiences are still very brand loyal.

PC Gaming

Many seasoned gamers believe the PC to be the true platform to play video games. One of the benefits of this platform is that you don’t continually have to invest in a new and expensive console. The life expectancy of a gaming computer is much longer than gaming consoles like Xbox and Playstation.

PC is also the platform used most frequently in eSports tournaments. Professional players can compete in high-stakes tournaments where they compete for cash prizes. Some of the highest-paying matches are on PC, including games like CounterStrike: Global Offense, Fortnight, and others.

Mobile Gaming

As we already mentioned, mobile gaming is the leading sector in the gaming industry. Most people have mobile devices these days. With their versatility and affordability, it’s more likely that someone would buy a mobile before they buy a gaming console.

Mobile games also include many different genres, making them more accessible to a wider audience. Individuals who’ve never played video games before might be more inclined to download a simple puzzle game on their mobile phone.

Mobile games are also easier to create, and as such, thousands of mobile games are readily available to download. Also, many of these games are free, increasing the likelihood of being installed and enjoyed. Mobile gaming has brought the gaming industry to audiences like never before.

Virtual Reality Gaming

Virtual reality (VR) is becoming more popular in the gaming industry. With VR gaming, the gamer wears a headset to explore the game’s digital world as if they’re physically there. Initially, VR was mostly used for simulations, and movements or interactions were quite limited.

However, in the newest models, many of these issues have been resolved. Players can now enjoy a much more immersive experience in VR gaming. Most sets include hand paddles which allow the user to interact with the digital environment. Game developers are also aware of VR sickness and actively work on reducing this effect in VR games.

However, VR gaming sets are still quite expensive since VR is still a relatively new development. As such, they haven’t significantly impacted the gaming industry yet. But we believe that within the next few years, VR gaming will become more prominent as access to these devices become easier.

Key Developments That Have Shaped the Gaming Industry

The technological advances over the last few decades have had a significant effect on the video game industry. What initially started as simple lines with a dot moving back and forth have developed into vast open-world games with different environments to explore.

One of the first developments that shaped the gaming industry was the improvement of digital graphics. What started as simple 2D rendering of highly pixelated images has now become highly realistic games where it becomes difficult to distinguish the game graphics from reality.

In the past, games’ graphics consisted of large pixels that were roughly drawn. However, more powerful processors and GPUs make it possible for game developers to create games with detailed images and environments. We’ve seen how this technology has evolved and improved in just the last few years.

Another key development has come in the way we play video games. Mobile games have enabled gamers to play games anywhere at any time. Video game streaming makes it possible for gamers to enjoy playing video games without a console of PC. Augmented reality also has an effect on how gamers play. An example of this is the popularity of Pokemon GO, where users have to physically move around to play the game.

Another key development that has shaped the gaming industry is related to the business. There are now so many more options to earn money from gaming. This also isn’t limited to game developers, but even gamers can earn money from gaming.

For video game developers, digital downloads, in-game purchases, and streaming services all make it possible for developers to get their games into the hands of players. Gamers can also get involved in the business side of things by participating in online gaming tournaments, earning sponsorships for playing professionally, and even creating gaming-related content on channels like YouTube and Twitch.

Why Is the Future of the Video Game Industry So Bright?

The future of the video game industry is definitely looking bright. Consumer demand is consistently increasing, technology is rapidly advancing, and new monetization methods are taking off. The video game industry is already larger than the music and movie industries combined, with more than two billion gamers globally. This equates to 26% of the global population, and it’s expected to continue growing.

Video game engagement has increased drastically in the last few years. While this number spiked during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the engagement rates have remained solid since then. In the US alone, engagement rates skyrocketed to 55% of the population during the peak of the lockdown.

Continued technical innovations also keep the gaming industry fresh and exciting. Virtual and augmented reality are majorly affecting how gamers play video games. At this stage, VR gaming is limited to specialized VR platforms. Still, once the technology integrates with PC and console gaming, another major shift will come to the video game industry.

The ways that users consume gaming content have also taken a drastic turn. These days gaming related content on Twitch and YouTube are some of the most popular videos. Creators make gaming content and videos in which their audiences can watch them play a game. Stats report that 71% of millennials watched gaming video content (GVC) in 2022. This number equated to 1.2 billion people and $9 billion in-game revenue. Aside from videos, other forms of content such as guides still remain popular.

Another factor that contributes to the shiny future of gaming is the management of franchises. Popular gaming franchises are realizing the benefits of creating meaningful and compelling intellectual property across their franchises. Franchise management has also realized the benefit of extending the game’s life cycle through expansions, sequels, and recurring content drops.

Some franchises have even extended the game’s life cycle beyond gaming and into other entertainment industries. The industries that have seen success with such expansions are movies and series. Although this has been effectively done in the past, think of the popularity of Pokemon games and the long-lasting animated TV series, it’s being done more frequently now, with varying results. A few examples of this are the hit TV series The Witcher and Last of Us, both based on popular video games.

There are several trends that are currently affecting the gaming industry. Innovation and advances are required in any industry to ensure growth and healthy revenue, and video games are no different. While technology is important, there are also other factors that impact how games are received.

Over the past few years, there have been a number of key points within the video game industry, and currently, a few important ones will play an important role in shaping how we enjoy video games. Let’s take a look at some of the most significant trends.

Increased Diversity in Games

For the longest time, the gaming industry has been male-dominated. Recently, there’s been a notable shift, and more women are starting to enjoy playing video games. Mobile games have played a significant role in making games available to a more diverse audience. However, there have also been other changes within the gaming community that have made the video game industry more diverse.

In many games, you’re stuck with the typical white male character. However, in recent years character customization has improved to the point where many games allow users to change the gender, race, and skin tone of their characters. Some of the games even let you choose your strengths and weaknesses to give a more diverse experience. Women and minorities are also becoming more prominent in the gaming worlds created.

Growth of Cloud Gaming Services

While digital game purchases opened up the gaming industry to many new audiences, it’s not a perfect system. While it promises to be a simple process where you browse through a library of video games, choose one you like, and then buy and download it. It’s not always this easy. Digital games can take a long time to download, especially if the servers where you’re buying from are slow. Not to mention that sometimes there can be issues, such as your hardware not being powerful enough to play the game.

Cloud gaming aims to resolve these issues. Cloud gaming bypasses these issues by enabling you to stream the game in real time. With cloud gaming, you don’t always need the latest technology (which is often expensive), but you can still play the latest games as long as you have a good internet connection.

Multi-Platform Gaming

While console wars are an ongoing battle, with many fans demanding exclusive releases, the reality is that multi-platform games bring in the most revenue. This makes sense because if you make a game available on PC, Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo, you can access audiences from all those markets rather than limiting yourself to only one.

Crossplay titles are in demand, and if you consider the success of popular multi-platform games like Genshin Impact, Roblox, Fortnite, and others, you can see why more gaming studios are aiming to create games that are available across different platforms.

Big Studio Games vs. Indie Games

We know that the gaming industry is worth billions, and creating a top-of-the-line video game can cost AAA gaming companies millions; these aren’t your only option. Indie games created by independent game developers and small studios shouldn’t be underestimated.

There have been a few cases in recent years where these indie games have become a massive hit. If you take a look at games like Minecraft, Stardew Valley, and Roblox, these games were released as small indie games. There was no way that the block-like and pixelated graphics could compete with the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2 and similar releases. Yet, these games still made a big splash!

This shows that a great gaming experience and good storytelling can still boost an Indie game and make it a decent competition, even against video games released by AAA gaming companies. The indie gaming trend continues baffling and surprising gamers with gems we didn’t think we needed.

Conclusion

There’s no denying that the gaming industry remains bright. With continued advances in technology along with new and better ways to enjoy video games, the video game industry is set to continue growing. While many experts had their doubts about the industry when the first games were launched decades ago, the recent statistics don’t lie.

The gaming industry is already performing better than both the music and television/movie industries combined. The trends also predict that the industry will continue growing at a rapid pace as the technology keeps improving. We can look forward to better consoles, better games, and more ways to enjoy gaming.
